●９月というのに、猛暑はいっこう収まらない。むしろ、いっそうひどくなっているように感じる。ベランダのプランターの朝顔は水が足りなくて枯れたも同然の姿になる。水は如雨露一杯では足りなく、たっぷり２杯、鉢の底に水が溜まるほど注いでいる。半日もすれば水が底をつく。朝顔の色も濃い青だったのが、今朝は色を失って薄紫になっている。いつものように２輪を摘んで今朝の食卓に置いた。

●９月１日の有花さんの投句の「八月尽」ついて自由な投句箱に説明した。私が俳句の問題で説明するのが一番難しいと思っているのは「季語」である。歳時記には、机上で使うもの、吟行などに携帯するもの、さらに詳しい大歳時記と言われるものがある。問題はこの「大歳時記」である。新季語が取り上げられることもあり、著名人がそれを使う場合もある。しかし私から見れば、内容によっては慎重に見極める必要があると感じることもある。著名人の句を批判するのは難しい。俳句を褒めるのは私にとっては、やりやすい。句の問題点を指摘することは、私にとって容易ではない。褒めておけば無難、というわけではない。俳句の問題点は、技術だけでなく、言葉の象徴性や倫理性など、複雑な要素が絡み合っている。季語の範囲があまりに広がり、もはや何でも季語になり得るように感じる。象徴としての季語の働きが弱まっているものもある。季語に触れるには慎重さが求められるが、私自身、慎重さを忘れるというより、つい手を伸ばしてしまう——それもまた、季語の魅力なのかもしれない。季語が「なんでもあり」となれば、逆に季語がないと同様になる。今後、季語はどう変容していくのだろうか。

On September 1st, I offered an explanation in the free submission box regarding Yuka-san’s haiku using the seasonal phrase “End of August.” What I find most difficult when discussing haiku is the matter of kigo—seasonal words. There are various types of saijiki (seasonal word dictionaries): those for desk reference, those carried during ginko (poetic outings), and the more detailed ones known as daisaijiki. The issue lies with this daisaijiki. New seasonal words are sometimes introduced, and prominent figures may choose to use them. Yet from my perspective, depending on the content, I often feel that careful discernment is required.
It is difficult to critique the haiku of well-known individuals. For me, praising a haiku is far easier. Pointing out a poem’s weaknesses is not something I find easy. That said, simply offering praise for safety’s sake is not the answer either. The problems within a haiku are not limited to technique—they involve complex elements such as the symbolic nature of language and ethical considerations.
The scope of kigo has expanded so much that it feels as though anything can now be considered a seasonal word. Some kigo seem to have lost their symbolic power. Engaging with kigo demands caution, yet for myself, it’s not that I forget to be cautious—it’s that I find myself reaching out to them nonetheless. Perhaps that, too, is part of their allure.
If kigo become “anything goes,” then they may as well not exist at all. How will kigo evolve from here?（the translarion by copilot ）
